Cats are generally curious and will want to investigate a new object within the household. Cats that are already used to a covered litter box may be quicker to investigate. We recommend that Litter-Robot be placed where the old litter box used to be. The old litter box can be removed, or left next to the Litter-Robot for a short time. Then, take a cup of litter from the old box and dump it in the globe of the Litter-Robot. The scent will be familiar, and the cat will be inclined to investigate. Once the cat has ventured inside and feels the litter under its paws, they know what to do. Please read "Getting Your Cat to Use Litter-Robot".
2. Can kittens use the Litter-Robot?
To ensure the comfort and safety of your cat, we strongly advise against using the Litter-Robot in unsupervised, automatic mode for kittens or small cats that weigh less than 5 pounds. Due to their low weight, kittens and small cats will not activate the cat sensor. You can, however, start the Litter-Robot cleaning cycle manually by switching the unit on when the litter bed needs to be cleaned and then switching the unit off again once the cycle has been completed. You can continue this manual "supervised" mode until your kittens have gained sufficient weight to activate the cat sensor. In this way, you still enjoy the benefit of not having to scoop the litter box by hand.
3. What are the dimensions of the Litter-Robot?
- Overall dimensions: 28 ½ in (H), 22 in (W) and 24 in (D).
- Waste drawer: 10 ½ in (W), 13 in (L), 6 in (D).
- Oval shaped entry opening for the cat: 8 ¾ in (H), 6 ½ in (W).
- The litter bed area measures 14 inch across at maximum litter capacity.
- There is 13 to 15 inches of head room for the cat inside the globe depending on the level of litter. The inside width is 20 inches across at the widest point, and depth is 15 inches front to back.
4. What happens if my cat won't use it?

5. Does the Litter-Robot require special litter?
The Litter-Robot does not require any special litter. In fact, Litter-Robot works fine with all clay-based clumping litters and with a variety of litter alternatives including litter beads and pearls. Litters that do not work are the strictly absorbent clay-based, non-clumping litters.
6. Does the Litter-Robot work with Feline Pine?
No, the pellet size of Feline Pine is too large to allow clean litter to pass through our sifting screen. This would cause all litter pellets to get dumped out during a cleaning cycle.
7. How often do I need to empty the waste drawer?
This depends on how many cats you have and their size. For two average sized cats, emptying the waste drawer 1 or 2 times per week is typical. For a single cat, once per week is usually sufficient.
8. What happens if my cat tries to enter the globe while it is rotating?
The cat sensor detects the presence of your cat and turns off the motor. The Litter-Robot will wait for 15 seconds before attempting to resume the clean cycle.
9. Are there any rakes, mechanisms, or wires inside the globe?
The globe does not contain any mechanisms or wires that could hurt or harm your cat. The Litter-Robot was designed with your cat's safety in mind.
10. Are the electronics or power source dangerous to my cat?
No, the Litter-Robot operates on 12 VDC using an adapter, very similar to the adapters that you may use at home for a clock radio, or to charge your cell phone. All electrical components are located in the base, away from where the cat could reach them. There are no electrical components inside the globe.
11. Will the globe turn while my cat is inside?
The globe cannot turn while your cat is inside. The cat sensor is tripped any time a cat enters or re-enters the globe, resetting the timer to prevent the cleaning cycle from starting for another 7 minutes.
12. What happens if the globe jams?
The motor shuts off automatically if the globe jams or an excessive load condition occurs.
13. Is dust a problem with the movement of the litter?
No, dust is no problem. The slow rotation of the globe combined with the size of the filtering screen result in minimal agitation of the litter.
14. How much litter do I have to put in Litter-Robot?
Typically you can start with no more than 9 lbs. (or 1 ½ gallons of litter, whichever is less), but the Litter-Robot will hold up to 14 lbs. Since the litter is cleaned at every cycle, there is no need to put excessive litter in the globe. Make sure that the litter level is no higher than 2 inches below the bottom rim of the cat entry opening when the Litter-Robot is in the home position.
15. How often do I need to add litter?
This will depend on personal preference, but experience shows that with two small cats (approx. 8 lbs. each), litter needs to be added about once a month, and sometimes it goes longer than that. The Litter-Robot is very efficient in its use of litter since the sifting mechanism only removes the clumps.
16. How often do I have to clean the inside of the Litter-Robot globe?
How often the Litter-Robot needs cleaning depends on your personal preference and your cat's behavior. However, we recommend that you clean the inside of the globe every 1-3 months.
17. How do I clean the Litter-Robot?
Cleaning the Litter-Robot exterior is easy. Just remove the globe and the drawer and give them a sponge bath, or take them outside for deep cleaning with the garden hose. All other surfaces can be wiped clean but should not be submerged.
- Globe - Exterior: The exterior of the globe can simply be wiped with a damp sponge and a mild soap or detergent. If you clean the exterior of the globe with the globe mounted on top of the base unit, make sure the sponge is damp and not overly wet - to prevent water from leaking into the base unit.
- Globe - Interior: Before you clean the Litter-Robot globe interior, please make sure that you remove all litter from the globe - wet litter turns into messy clay. To remove all litter, press the "Empty" button on the Control Panel. The globe will rotate clockwise and all litter will be discharged into the waste drawer. After removing litter from the globe, clean with water and a mild soap. There are no electronic components in the globe which can be damaged by soap and water. The globe can actually be submerged or cleaned with a garden hose or pressure washer. Make sure that the globe interior is completely dry before adding new litter.
- Drawer: The drawer can be removed and cleaned with soap and water.
- Base: Never submerge the base. Wipe surfaces of base with a cloth dampened with a disinfectant.
